Twiki starts development!
-- No longer a prototype --
Twiki is back! With a similar build to what we had before, but this time everything has been carefully crafted to fit in the for real project that is our game. Things are not shoddily thrown together anymore, and all of the scripts have even more customization so everything can be twiked as we please. For that reason, things are taking about the same time as they did for the prototype (even though we already made most of the current features for that prototype), but it's definitely worth it. We also went with a bit of a different approach to level design, focusing more on height and verticality (note: the prototype was very horizontal).
-- Current features --
-- Dart traps --
Some walls secretly hold darts! Walking over a suspicious looking piece of floor, pressing a suspicious button or plain walking in front of a suspicious looking wall? You, too, may be eradicated by a barrage of arrows (or you can kill enemies with it). These walls are so cool that they can even hold different patterns of darts, to eliminate you (or your enemies) in style!
-- Moving players --
Twi and Ki can both move around, and Ki can jump! And wall-jump! And stand on Twi's head! Wait.. that's something new?! The reason for this is players felt a tad too 'separate' in the prototype, and wanted a bit more interaction between the two players. We're giving that in the form of head standing!
-- Things on the screen --
There's a start screen and an end screen! They have buttons (currently: start, options, quit) and the options screen even has a volume slider (that's all it does for now, though). In game there's a UI which keeps track of your players' health and score. Make sure your health bars stay as green as possible!
-- Dolly camera --
The camera we're using is on a 'dolly track', always looking centrally between the two players and expanding its field of view once they go too far apart. We're planning on having objects between the camera and the players fade, but that's something for future weeks.
-- Transportation --
An alien beam takes you up into the sky and moves you to a different location (usually just the next room, no abductions going on here). There's also a lift that can take you up in a less scary manner, which is used to get Twi to higher places (that big oaf can't jump for himself).
-- Melee enemy --
There's a scary enemy that chases you once you get too close and hits you with tons of damage (they don't actually deal that much damage on their own, but we try not to hurt their feelings). It can also die to traps, so be clever with your triggering of those cleverly disguised hazards!
-- Next up --
More traps, more enemies, larger environments, more art, more sound. We'll add everything the prototype had by next week. The other features we're looking to add will be revealed in time, but let's not show our hand all at once, right? Until next week!
